Stories for Booklights
Traditional art, handcrafted horror and stories that make you want to talk about them at dinner.
Unique Stories
No familiar formulas. Every title at Gloomy Wood begins with a question no one else has asked before. Or maybe they shouldn't have asked.
Fantastical Places
Worlds that feel ancient and alive, familiar but new. Libraries the size of cities, crumbling cathedrals and underground lairs.
Classical Roots
Comics should be a combination of everything that came before, with a twist. Classical art and comics go hand in hand.
The Philosophy.
Definitely Aristotelian with a smidge of Hobbes, plus a... oh wait, that's not what this means. You should want to see basic attitudes a writer has before you spend time delving into their worlds. You could, after all, find yourself somewhere you never expected, or even wanted to be.
But then, if I talk about what the books are about, isn't that taking away the fun part? Probably. So let me say what these books aren't. (Still not sold that's a word.) They aren't gratuitous, they aren't lascivious, they aren't crass, lewd, or nihilistic. Even if a story or setting has weight and can be jarring, in the end, the themes are clear, and you won't feel like you need to take a shower after reading. There are plenty of other comics, movies, and books that do that.
That being said, fun, adventure, mystery, action? All of that and more. Vistas and visions, sights and settings, monsters and malevolence await.
Traditional Art and Writing
No AI, ever. Coffee, Reese's and jazz. Stories written and drawn by a human, with all the foibles, faults and occasional brilliance that comes with it.
Pulp Roots
When everything is a minor iteration of what came before it, Gloomy Wood starts at the beginning. From Doc Savage to the Shadow to Indiana Jones. Roll back the clock to keep the time moving forward.
Gothic to Gotham
Gloomy Wood treats the grandeur of cathedrals and the gritty Gotham gargoyles with the same gravitas. We also do alliteration.
